Invisible Crit, Space and willing participants, 2014 - Ongoing
A group is assembled for a critique in an empty gallery space. Everything proceeds in the format of a group critique of a show except there is nothing to look at. Participants are asked to imagine, describe, and address any elements of the nonexistent work that interest them (formal, conceptual, or whimsical). There is no guidance as to the aesthetic, subject matter, or even the medium of the show. As an object or occurrence is mentioned, other members of the group can counter or affirm the speakers interpretation, or even the physical details, of the invisible work. Through conversation an entire invisible show tangentially develops. The entire session is audio recorded. After the crit is over, this recording is used by the group of participants as a score to “reconstruct” the exhibition, working together to fabricate any objects and organize any occurrences mentioned in the initial conversation. The reconstructed show, the realized invisible critique, is presented to the public as the final installation.
